Weekly math challenges proposal
I've thought we could organize some weekly or fortnightly math challenge. This will be some problems that will be posted on some place which many can access (notice board, the forum, etc). The challenge is to be the first (or maybe first 3) to successfully solve them. We will hand out official certificates with signatures to the winners.
The plan is to start small and see how much support we will get. We are going to need to publicise the club a lot.
If we get support (which I'm positive we will) then we can try bigger things.
We need some ideas as to how to market and reach out.

Re: Weekly math challenges proposal
I'm still not too convinced about the cert being a price, as it is totally not recognized in the outside world, making it just a piece of decoration in our future CV.
Perhaps we could get more recognized institutes like UM or our very own TUC to first recognize and verify the challange as a competition-worthy event, then the certs would be a much more attractive(and not to mention useful) piece of art!
Anyhow, additional prices should be considered for the top 3 and maybe certs(not participation la of course...different, more UBER ones XD) can be given to more contestants(maybe top 10?)

Re: Weekly math challenges proposal
We are going to address it with "Mathematics Club at TUCSJ" and it will be signed by the advisor teacher and the ECA office. It will be totally valid and as valid as any cert you get from Taylor's. Clubs in the college are organizing stuff everyday and giving out certs.
Any monetrary price will mean we are going to need a sponsor. Maybe after we get popular we can get Maccentre or something. Who knows? But we gotta start small.

Re: Weekly math challenges proposal
We'll need some way for people to submit their solutions to us. Any suggestions?

Re: Weekly math challenges proposal
There are many ways like submitting by email or posting it up on the forum. However we must make it a 1st come 1st serve.

Re: Weekly math challenges proposal
what we can do is post up those poster things on bulletin boards everywhere in the campus...i can tell u alot of ppl read those
then of course, here comes the tricky part... we can either suggest for them to go our website to take the test at a specified time...say maybe on 12pm-12am of friday and saturday ONLY....then ask them to submit their answers by MONDAY by email or by some sort of collection box which i think we can request to make...
of course, we can also seperate them into 2 categories, maths and further maths XD! of course the obvious advantage of further maths category is that less people will take part, so chances of winning is higher. And those who take part in fma, can also take part in maths.
just a suggestion

Just dropping by..
Hey, dont separate the further maths and maths category.. It wont make much difference i guess.. The smart ones will still be in strong contention for the prizes.. Let me just state a few reasons:
1. Is further maths students really that good? Take our class as an example, do the further maths students really beat the socks off people like Vicky, Cheong and so? I'll leave to u guys to think bout it..
2. How many classes are actually taking further maths? Or shall I say students? And out of those, how many are really eager to take part in our maths challenge? We might just end up with three participants in the FMA category and we'll have no choice but to announce all of them as winner..
3. Challenge setting, if we were to have a FMA category, how do set the questions? If that's considered difficult, then how bout the students answering? In the worst case scenario, we might have not even one who could do any of the questions.. By then, who are we gonna reward? All of them? or none of them?
4. It will be greater excitement if we can get everybody under one roof.. All intakes students can take part and it doesnt matter whether they are FMA students or not, as long as they are Taylorian, they are eligible to participate. The competition is much more healthier and widespread if we combine both into one.. Plus, we are not gonna set questions from our syllabus right? It will be something like olympiad I guess, then everyone should have no advantage over the other. Fair n Square.
Conclusion : Stick with one category.
that's all I can say for now. Cause i have to rush back to home.. i'll write more on my next visit.. Sorry guys, and take care! maths club rock!!! Join the maths club, club club club club.. haha......

Re: Weekly math challenges proposal
then how about making 1 single paper but with 90% normal maths(solvable by normal mankind) and 10% FMA questions(must be mr peter + lilian to solve...LOL! jkjk)? So maybe if u are the really really smart ones, u'll be able to answer 10 as opposed to those who are just smart enough to answer 9. The FMA question does not have to be from FMA but it can just be maths to a quite high level(of course still solvable la)...
By doing this, we can really seperate the good ones from the best ones. Because if the paper is not challanging enough, we will have a 100 student tie, and then we award them all first prize? LOL!
There is still a risk, as we can't set the question too impossible, for there to be multiple first prizers. In that case we will have to decide who will win based on their working(clear or not) and other elements(if any)
Conclusion : Setting a few super hard question can ease our efforts to seperate the good ones and the really good ones.
